My Students

I am a music teacher working at an elementary school that is really small. There are about two classes per grade level, so students really get to know each other. The students are very eager to learn and to try new things, and they love to express themselves through music and the arts.

Despite being a small school and not having a lot of money, the community has made the commitment to offering quality music instruction to every child attending the school.

They have a dedicated room for music, as well as a science lab and a great library.

My Project

Some books will be used to support rhythmic understanding by adding instruments to enhance the story line and rhythmic flow of the words. Some books are "about" books - to learn about cultural aspects of music like salsa, what an orchestra is, and simply - what is music?

Students learn how to read/sing expressively by watching someone else do it.

Some books are meant to be sung/read by the students, but I have also chosen books to read/sing to them and model how to express not only the intent of the author but my interpretation of the book.
