Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you teach the consequences of bullying in a community where this has become a norm? It's difficult to change what has been accepted as a way of life in an inner city community, especially with kids and parents behaving and talking like bullies. The movie "Bully" will encourage honesty and change.

The students are bright and many are easily influenced by what they see in their neighborhoods everyday, day in and day out.

It is all they know because they are not exposed to communities that are safe, organized, and where bullying is not acceptable. Influenced by the entertainment industry in which sometimes bullying behavior is portrayed as the only way to solve problems, my students don't fully understand what the real consequences of bullying are. Engaging in discussions about bullying and analyzing/interpreting the movie "Bully" will educate students to do better for themselves and to teach others who have misconceptions about what bullying is, what it looks like, and what the consequences are. My students have the potential to encourage others to change, and this opportunity will help them do so.

My Project

The goal for watching the movie "Bully" is to expose the students to the reality that bullying has serious consequences. When you ask many of our students the consequences of bullying they simply respond by saying: "Bullying hurts people's feelings." Or "if I get caught bullying I get in trouble with my teacher or principal." Watching students their age on screen being bullied, seeing them suffer, and ultimately seeing some of them go as far as taking their own lives will completely change the students' views on bullying as something that is "cool to do in order to get respect and get what you want." The goal is to empower the students to become advocates for change where they will educate their peers, their family, and hopefully take a strong stand against bullying and bully-like behavior in their school and community. Students will learn to sympathize with others and reflect on their own behaviors toward each other in order to plan how to improve their behaviors and communicate.

My project is important because bullying is not going away.

Watching the news right now I am listening to a story about an 11 year old boy who committed suicide because he was being bullied in school. There are not enough young people with the facts or courage to take a stand against these bullies in their communities. If we can educate many students and offer them tools to communicate in a more respectful manner to one another, hopefully these positive behaviors would bring about change.
