Help Ms. Haines

My Students

My students are often behind their peers in wealthy public and private schools simply because their classrooms haven't had the same supplies. In Chemistry, it's especially important that my students have access to chemicals and lab equipment so that they can experience chemistry first hand.

My students are mostly minority students and come from urban, often impoverished, neighborhoods.

They are often the first in their family to take Chemistry and the first to go on to college. My students love to learn but are often limited by the lack of resources in their homes, communities, and schools.

My Project

By experiencing Chemistry in a laboratory setting, I hope to inspire my students to continue on in science when they go to college. Students who enter college without having had a laboratory-based science experience are well behind many of their peers. I want my students to enter their college Chemistry classes feeling confident and comfortable in the lab. The equipment I have requested will allow my students to create their own battery using their knowledge of electrochemistry, create perfume (ester synthesis) using their knowledge of functional groups, and observe precipitation reactions that help develop their understanding of double and single replacement reactions.

When donors choose my project, they will be choosing to give my students the Chemistry experience they need and deserve to be successful in college science classes.

Their choice will also enable me to perform significantly more labs and demos in class. My students and I look forward to using these materials!
