Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As educators in a first grade Spanish/English bilingual class with 40% of students with learning disabilities, we are committed to providing high-quality education to all learners. Our project strives to transform math education from procedural to engaging, cultivating a positive attitude towards math, while empowering students to make real-world connections and apply their learning beyond the classroom.

In our classroom we have diverse learners who benefit from using manipulatives like the number lines, visuals, games, songs, etc.

Despite our best efforts to increase engagement during math, we have a scarce amount of math materials, games, and manipulatives to effectively engage our students and support their mathematical development in a fun way. This scarcity limits our ability to foster a math environment that provides diverse ways to explore and strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Acquiring a variety of math manipulatives such as interactive number lines and number bonds will help to facilitate kinesthetic learning and deepen students' conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. Investing in educational math games and activities will help with increasing engagement, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

By implementing these initiatives we hope to improve academic performance and increase student engagement and interest in math.
