My Students

My students in my all girls high school are bright, fun, and creative. They love to collaborate and read books that touch on subjects close to heart. Despite many obstacles, they come to school each day focused and ready to learn. Getting my students to love reading hasn't always been easy; that's why it's so important to provide texts that are interesting and get them to think about and discuss societal issues or themes.

Our school doesn't have a library, therefore classroom libraries come from donations and teacher funding.

Getting these books will introduce my students to the world of graphic novels, while also allowing them to tackle a sensitive subject in a classic novel. In our class, we incorporate different learning strategies and small group work to ensure that student needs are met. My students work through adversity every day and I will forever be proud of the young women they are shaping up to be.

My Project

These books will help deliver lessons to my students that will not only help them access material on state exams, but will also foster their love of reading and analyzing. Many of my students, due to our school's lack of grade level books, have not explored themes in a graphic novel. Getting these books will allow them to delve into a classic story of a high school student that struggles with finding her voice...an issue that many students in my all girls high school may deal with as well. With this new class set of books, my students will be able to explore topics of identity and triumph that may translate into their everyday lives, while also deepening their ability to analyze and dig deep into ideas and literary elements.
