I currently teach four basic subject areas-- Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies; to 33 first grade students in an urban area public school. Our school does not have the extra funds to fully supplement my Social Studies projects. These projects allow me to successfully and adequately integrate learning the states, the continents, and mapping skills in my classroom. All of my students participate in the free lunch program. They have challenges in recalling where a state is located, what its capitol is, how to navigate on a map, and even in a city using a map. “Exploring the US and Beyond” will provide my students with information about the states, the world, and provide them with the necessary basic mapping skills to utilize now and later.

During the school year a large part of my Social Studies unit is teaching the states and the continents with an incorporation of mapping skills. “Exploring the US and Beyond” provides my students with maps to share and use as a class when learning the location of states, using a Compass Rose, navigating across a map, seeing the ‘bigger picture’ of the world and the location of other countries and continents. It also provides my students with ongoing opportunities to study and learn about maps as a tool in finding locations in the US. In addition, my students begin to develop their spatial skills, reading skills, proper noun skills, and reinforce their retelling skills.

“Exploring the US and Beyond” introduces my students to the United States and the remaining parts of the world. They learn about location of countries and continents as they practice basic mapping skills to navigate in reading a map that can later help them in their neighborhood and city. They will read about the states, countries and continents while engaged in small student led and teacher led groups. My first graders will have materials to feel parts of the US using the globe and table top materials. Through my overhead demonstrations, my students will get a clearer concept of where states are located and gain larger sense basic mapping skills.

With your help my students can begin to explore and learn the location of the US states and this huge world as they incorporate basic mapping skills that will transform into life learning skills and possibly prepare some for choosing careers in geology. Having these materials will also aid my students in going beyond the requirements of our state educational standards of learning about the United States and it prepares them for their upcoming grades. These maps will be incorporated with other few reading materials I have that teach when the colonies became states.
