My Students

HFAA's science classes are somewhat unique when compared to standard science classes. As an arts integrated school my students are often asked to use their artistic abilities to demonstrate their understandings of scientific concepts in addition to traditional methods.

HFAA's student body is very diverse, arriving from every background imaginable, yet eager not to let their socioeconomic backgrounds hold them back from succeeding.

Most of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches. However, they are motivated to learn and meet our rigorous class and department standards. Most are not afraid to seek help when needed, and many of our top-performing students actively participate in our after-school tutoring programs. Student are more excited to learn science through hands-on activities and will take advantage of opportunities to discover beyond traditional lab assignments.

My Project

High School Biology curriculum covers cladistics & phylogeny (the ways scientists group different organisms based on relatedness), homology and analogy (whether similar traits are from genetic descent or because of functions), and dichotomous keys (identification systems). All of these topics take advantage of physical traits that are better envisioned with 3d models instead of pictures or lists of traits.

With these interactives, students will more easily build complex trees of organism relatedness based on observable physical traits.

Additionally, they will be able to discuss the various traits in terms of homology & analogy as well as create dichotomous trees based on the specific phylogenies they build. You can help make these topics more meaningful and enjoyable for my students.
