My Students

Communication is an extremely difficult skill to master, even for those of us with typical cognitive functioning. My students engage in class on a regular basis, but they are just beginning to develop the means to communicate themselves effectively.

My self-contained class of twelve 9th grade students is contained within a high school with a focus on occupational studies and vocational skills.

My students are classified with a variety of disabilities that make it challenging for them to communicate themselves effectively.

My Project

The art materials that I have requested will be used to conduct a unit on visual communication. We will explore a variety of art mediums, including watercolors, pastels, Sumi and pen drawing, in order to establish gateways between the students' artistic expression and their verbal and written communication.

My students spend a large amount of time in front of computers and television sets when they are not at school.

They do not have a period during the day that is designated to the arts. I feel that the arts can provide an expressive opportunity for my students that will allow them to build a stronger communicative foundation.
