My students need the Animal Kingdom Books Series to be used for research while completing our non-fiction unit on animals. They also need a variety of animal figures to be used along with the non-fiction unit of study to enhance their knowledge of the animals and encourage dramatic play.
I am a third grade teacher at a public school in New York. I work at a Title I school where 93% of the children receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Many of my students are English Language Learners and their parents are immigrants who do not know the English language. Therefore, it is very difficult for the children to receive help with their schoolwork at home.
I have found that children are really motivated to learn when they are learning about or reading about a topic of interest. One topic that I have found really interests the children I teach is science. When the children are learning to read or improve their reading, they must choose a topic that interests them. If they are reading books they really want to read, their reading ability will increase greatly, especially with children who are English Language Learners.
For this reason, I try to provide books for them on topics of interest. My library is very limited with science books. I would like to provide the children with this opportunity. One topic of great interest is animals. Every year I work on this topic with my children. I would like to include some new non-fiction books in my library this year that will be put to great use.
New books with fabulous pictures for the children to look at and learn from will make a tremendous difference in my classroom. A company called Lakeshore has a very large variety of books to choose from. The prices vary depending on the books ordered. I would love to get some new sets of animal books. This would provide a world of opportunity for these young readers. In addition, I would like to provides the children with some actual figures of animals to help this topic come to life. Providing the children with some hands on manipulatives will get their attention and peak their level of interest in this topic. Thank you very much for your consideration.
