Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever had the experience of literature bringing to life a time and place so vividly that you don't just get lost in the literature, but you think about the history of our country? This is the experience my students have when they study the plays of August Wilson. Wilson's words inspire!

My students are a combination of Latino, African-American, Asian and Eastern European, most of whom come from low income families facing many challenges, but they do not let that get in the way of their learning.

Our school is a small, community based school that creates a nurturing but academically challenging environment. Our students feel safe in our school and though they may have obstacles to overcome at home or on the streets, they come to school to learn and most are driven and motivated to get to college and continue with their education.

My Project

In my class we have been exploring the August Wilson play cycle for the past four years, but we have never been able to have copies of all ten plays for the students. This year we are excited about the prospect of being able to have different groups read each play and then put together an evening of performances of scenes from each play. Every year the performances are so powerful and the students are really able to see the scope and power of August Wilson's work and the way he has so dramatically captured an important part of the history of our country throughout the 20th Century. Each play is set in a different decade and when you put all of them together, you are able to really see important connections throughout the years and trace changes in the face of our country.

My students connect to the stories and the words that August Wilson weaves through his plays.

His use of language is so powerful and the study of drama really allows all students to engage with the literature while exploring different historical eras and making connections to their lives today.
