Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A year has passed since our school buildings first closed because of COVID. These days, our K-5 music classes meet virtually for weekly music lessons. With help from our incredible DonorsChoose community, we have built a collection of instruments for students to play at home, and students "bring" their Community Collection instruments to our virtual music lessons each week.

Even though we can't play together in person, our musical learning continues.

Students use a variety of online tools and platforms to practice new rhythms and melodies, explore technique, develop their own musical compositions, and perform for one another. I am constantly inspired by students’ enthusiasm, curiosity, and musical creativity.

My Project

Our first grade musicians are proud to welcome a musical visitor to our virtual classroom! As a part of our first grade music curriculum, all first grade students are exploring tabla and the music of India. In our weekly virtual music lessons, we are deepening our understanding of pulse and rhythm, learning about tabla music, and working together to rehearse and perform tabla compositions.

Our special musical guest, a prominent performer and teacher of tabla, will join our live music lessons to guide our learning and inspire our music making.

We are looking forward to a rich and meaningful unit of musical learning. Thank you for supporting our virtual class visit!
