Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Teacher, I saw a blue star last night!" That is just one comment from one student that got to borrow the classroom telescope. We need more in the class so more students can share in the excitement

My kids are amazing.

I have 45 between two classes. One class is a gifted, high achieving group, and the other is a low level ESL group. About 95 percent are from low income and/or broken families. It is hard to get them excited about learning because most of them do not have any dreams about their future. Most of them come from uneducated families that do not really know how to motive their children to do their best. These kids do not really know what life has to offer outside of their neighborhood.

My Project

My students need four telescopes to borrow at night to explore the night sky and a star theater to enjoy during our space units. Currently, I have one telescope in my classroom that I allow students to check out each day. They love it! They never forget it is their night to take it home, nor do they ever forget to bring it back. They call it our "class pet." I want to be able to allow at least two students per class check out the telescopes each night. This would allow them to discuss with each other what they saw. Also, it would allow them more opportunities throughout the year to explore the sky. I would like for them to take one home at least once each season. Our current telescope is the only one any of my students have ever touched, much less, taken home an explored with it. Looking at picture is great, but looking at the real thing is the best. We would use our planetarium in our room to search out constellations and try to experience what the explorers of our past used to predict events.

I just want to give my kids an opportunity to enjoy studying space.

I want to help them open their minds to becoming scientists, explorers, teachers..dreamers. This project will help these kids dream about what is out there. Also, it will help them become more responsible with other people's property. This just might be the only time in their lives they actually get to use a telescope. Maybe, just maybe, it might bring them together with their parents, or guardians, to share some quality time.
