My Students

At the beginning of school year most of my students say, "Science is boring!" As the school year moves by, I do my best to change "boring" to "interesting", and later to "fascinating!" This is my biggest challenge and I hope my students will find science fascinating with the help of an Apple tablet.

I teach Living Environment in High School in metropolitan NY.

My students are very diverse. I teach students with learning disabilities and behavioral problems. These kids are lacking reading and writing skills and have a hard time controlling their behavior in class. Therefore they need additional resources: colorful presentations, three dimensional animations, videos and of course, to be able to manipulate the images. All these things can be accomplished by using the science related apps on an Apple tablet.

My Project

These are the great Apple tablet apps that I would like to use in my science class: 3D Brain - students will use the touch screen to rotate and zoom around 29 interactive structures of the brain and what happens when it is injured, and how it is involved in mental illness. 3D Cell Simulation and Stain Tool -students will learn about the cell and all its structures using this 3D cell tool. They will be able to rotate the cell 360 degrees and zoom in on any cell structure and choose from the list of cell structures to learn more about how each structure functions and relates to the other components of the cell. Language Central for Science Life Science Edition- students will have fun studying vocabulary terms with Pearson's Language Central for Science. They will boost their memory with Interactive Science Flash Cards. The Virtual Bacterial ID Lab - students will learn about the techniques used to identify bacterial DNA sequences.

One of my goals as a science teacher is to excite my students with science.

An Apple tablet is a very engaging tool that will help my students to visualize and become a part of a scientific processes. With an Apple tablet science will never be boring. It will also help me as a teacher to keep students with behavioral problems focused and to better manage their behavior.
