Exploring Science Through the iPad

My students need an iPad for science. They need to locate stars, planets and constellations "in the night sky", and find out when and where to look for celestial objects.

My Students

"Our kids will spend the rest of their lives in the future. Are we getting them ready?" (Kevin Hangout, EdTech Consultant) My students are behind in science because they are bored with their textbooks. They need technology-based science programs to "hook them" on learning about their world.

My school is located in a semi rural area of Georgia and is a Title I school with an 80% free and reduced lunch rate.

The students who attend my school are under severe financial hardship and many do not have internet connectivity at home. In addition, most of the students do not have the opportunity to share authentic science experiences with their families, such as gazing into the stars or going to museums to study fossils. The result is that the students are lacking important background knowledge that they need in order to be successful and competitive in school as they grow and develop. As digital natives, the students strive for excellence, but at the same time, they are a bit "disconnected" when they do not have the technology that they feel they need to learn the way they know how to learn. They are creative and inquisitive but feel that their textbooks are not giving them the information they need to really understand the wonders of science and they are growing bit frustrated.

My Project

By helping make this project a reality, you will be changing the lives of my students and possibly helping to encourage the next astronaut or astronomer! My students will be able to use interactive solar system applications to zoom in on planets (and even give them a spin), get statistics about solar system objects including where they (the objects) are located, learn how astronomers find distant planets, and even set up notifications for every new discovery made!

We need to teach for the future and not our past.

It is very important that we connect with our students using current technology. This is your chance to help level the playing field and help my students see themselves as future scientists. While it is not always safe for them to be outside in the dark “star gazing”, my students will be able to do it virtually by seeing the sky on the iPad. They will be able to identify constellations and planets and learn tons of facts about the night time sky.
