I teach seventh and eighth grade math and science at Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx. The student population is 1,622. 47% of the students are female and 53% are male. 60% of the students are Hispanic and 36% are Black. 90% of the students are eligible for free lunch. In New York State, eighth grade students are required to pass the Grade 8 Intermediate-Level Science Test in order to be promoted to high school. The test is composed of multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, extended response questions and a performance test. In the performance test, the students are asked to use scientific equipment such as scales and microscopes to find answers to questions posed in the exam. Our students have not performed well on this portion of the exam in the past. One of the reasons is because the school lacks the equipment and material. The little we do have is not in good working condition. Moreover, there is simply not enough of the equipment to use in a classroom of thirty students. I believe that if the students are exposed to the equipment in a sufficient amount of time, the students will perform at a higher level. In addition, it is important that students use the same equipment that scientists use in order to gain a better understanding of science. The use of the equipment also engages the student. The student takes more of an active role in their learning. The microscopes would be used to examine plant and animal cells. One of the biggest ideas in the Living Environment curriculum is the ability to differentiate between plant and animal cells. The students should also be able to identify the structures of the cell as well as its function. The microscope is a powerful tool because it allows the students to examine structures that are responsible for important life functions. I would greatly appreciate microscope slides in order to improve student performance on the exam.
