Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching at a predominantly African American and Latino high school I have encountered many times that our Latino students do not know much about the contributions of their native countries' leaders, inventors and writers. Most of them are not taught at home or have yet to read about their history.

My students are juniors and seniors in high school.

They are full of energy and very aware of their community but unaware of the outside of their borough. Our school is an urban planning school in NY and predominantly a low-income area. Many of my students have been given low expectations in writing and reading so when they arrive in my Latin American studies they feel over their heads.

My Project

Having an array of choices for a good historical Latin American Studies book, my students will find their interest which I hope will spark intense reading and writing on a next level. Allowing them to read a whole book for one semester will push their skills where they need to be for college. Mastering one book on a country, leader or government from Latin America can be a good challenge they never received especially a college level book. Think of the confidence it will build. Confidence they need for college writing in English and history.

Most of my students are of Latin American descent, I feel that learning about their culture will help them feel the importance of family history.

Through cultural studies, I hope students will learn to compete and increase exam grades but most importantly write about their past. I want to help them learn about their past and ancestral history in hopes of instilling pride and create a renaissance in their academic tenure in our school.
