Help Mr. Halpern

I teach Marine Science to High School Juniors in a high-need community. My goal is to motivate these students to attend college and enter careers in the Life Sciences. I have found that hands-on activities in the Marine Sciences can serve to spark interest in my students and provide a critical skill for future college requirements.

I recently had a lab activity involving the study of an algae appendage (Holdfast) from the ocean that serves to attract numerous invertebrate organisms. Students used magnifying glasses to observe a diverse community of marine invertebrates. The enthusiasm and interest exhibited was amazing and inspiring. Students expressed curiosity to learn more.

One barrier was the inability to view the intricate details of these tiny organisms. A binocular microscope would serve as critical resource for these students. Current budget constraints prohibit such a purchase.

Your help would provide a critical piece of equipment that can be utilized by individual students for a number lab activities as well as a teacher demonstration station. This gift would go along way in motivating this challenged group of students.
