Students in our classroom come from many types of homes. Our school is placed on the outside of a major city. We are the oldest school in our district, the smallest, and the one who seems to always get the bad reputation that has been layered on for many decades. However, my kids love their school and their friends. This is their home. They have a zest for life! Their smiles are contagious. We are a family no matter what. That is the environment we create together in my class so that we can deal and get away from the harsh realities of home. My students deserve all of the essential tools to learn just as others do. We are a Title 1 campus which means almost all of my students require free or reduced lunch assistance.
My Project
These materials are going to be a great tool to open up more opportunities for learning how to learn, create, and play together. It will make a huge difference in their ability to socially interact authentically. Students will use these materials each day. I will be able to model how to join a group, how to play kindly, how to ask to share, and how to collaborate. While these basic skills will be addressed, creativity and academics can easily be incorporated with these materials. For example, Magnetic tiles can be used to talk about 3-D shape properties. Instead of students counting faces and edges of a shape already made for them...they can create their own 3-D shape which enhances more relevance in their learning
