Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an art teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse in the nation, and while we serve so many different students, I want their experiences to be seen and heard across campus, and ultimately the community.

Art is an expressive tool to help embrace student identity, and visualize the beauty in our differences.

My goal is to create an inclusive classroom community that is unafraid to create art that is accepting, loving, and celebrating each and every student we consist of. We are learning about art, activist artists, and art movements that have promoted change, embraced difference, and represented the community.

My Project

The paints, brushes, and palettes will be utilized by young artists as they learn how to use a brush, mix colors to create new colors, alter tints, and shades, and color theory. This cart will make a painting experience accessible to my art students as they learn and understand color relationships, mixing colors using primary colors, and the emotive qualities of colors. Visual perception, and the knowledge of color allows you to understand an artwork at a deeper level, and will enhance students' sense of color And ability to interpret artworks.

Color knowledge increases student understanding about everything they come in contact with visually, and experience.

Understanding how our eyes see color will not only allow students to create beautiful artworks, but appreciate the colors that surround their daily life. Painting is an expressive outlet, and foundational art technique where students can creatively express their identity, voice, and style. Students will have their own brushes, palette, and opportunity to learn how to mix their own colors while exploring the technique of paint. Color theory and color relationships are vital throughout the art making process, as well as everyday decisions when shopping, traveling, exploring, and interpreting the world around us.

The water colors make an additional medium accessible to each student in my classes to experiment with two different painting mediums. The cutting mats will make printmaking an opportunity in our class, as students will use the cutting mats, markers, and blades to learn another art technique that does not require as much color mixing.
