Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English to 9th graders at an inner city school located in a high-poverty area in New York. Our school is dedicated to ensuring that our students attend college. For most of my students, they will be the first in their families to achieve this goal.

Many of my students are not aware of broad range of careers open to them. They only know about the jobs people in their neighborhood hold, or they plan on becoming the next basketball star. Not to discount someone's dream, but I doubt I am teaching 75 future NBA stars! Given the difficulties my students face, it is no wonder they are looking for a way out. Many of them witness or experience neglect, gang violence, alcoholism, and drug abuse. I would just like to broaden their career horizons. Career World Magazine would open up a new world of possibilities for them. Learning about exciting career opportunities may keep my students motivate when faced with negative outside influences. These students have wonderful potential, but they need to see the many paths open to them in order to fulfill that potential.

With a class subscription to Career World, my students would receive detailed and current information about a wide variety of careers. The magazine includes market trends, college planning guides, and advice on how to achieve your goals. Armed with these educational tools, my students can make better decisions about their future.
