My Project

Each year, students in my classroom community are put through a financial awareness week. The overall project format is a fairly extensive simulation: students are given a job and there are events, life choices, and scenarios that are presented. Students are tasked with buying a car, developing a grocery list, finding a suitable home to rent, planning a vacation, and more (depending on the year (visiting a wedding, saving for a new house, starting a business, developing a non-profit) and more). They track stocks and listen to speakers from local banks. They brainstorm expenses and try to determine what is and what is not within their budget.

While this has week has historically been incredibly informative and important for students, the educational and life messages could be more memorable if we add more cooperative, fun activities.

We started this with the inclusion of some web-based games (Play Stax, The Uber Game, and Playspent). I've found these play-based lessons to be not only the highlight but the anchor for this weeks' learning. Accordingly, I am looking to acquire more financial board games to engage my students. Giving some time during recess to play these games would, ideally, solidify their knowledge and push that competitive spirit that is the foundation for capitalism.

Mr. Zac will only receive his materials if this project is fully funded by July 25.
