Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Even though my students live in New York City, many of them do not have the opportunity to attend events at concert halls or theaters. I teach music at a public elementary school. Due to the many socioeconomic barriers our families face, they are not afforded the opportunity to indulge in these inspiring and uplifting performances. My students come from over 20 different nations from all around the world. Many speak different languages and enjoy sharing their cultures with their fellow students and teachers. We celebrate our differences together and learn to be proud of our unique identities. My school prides itself in encouraging children to express themselves through music, dance, and visual art. Our students live for the arts. They walk in the door singing songs they've made up and eagerly share drawings they created at home. The performing arts have made a lasting impression on the hearts of our students. They deserve to be a part of the bigger picture.

My Project

Think back to the first concert hall you've ever been in. Remember the lights flashing? The melodies pouring out of the speakers? The magic of the performers singing and dancing their hearts out on a magnificent stage? There is something about a live concert performance that sticks with you forever.

Carnegie Hall has an inspiring educational program called Musical Explorers that teaches all about musicians from around the world that have moved to New York City.

Students in the program attend two concerts at Carnegie Hall and receive a workbook that includes bios of artists, music theory and history lessons, and all of the music for the concerts. Students learn to sing different languages and folk dance to the musical selections for the concert. These interactive concerts inspire children to be proud of their musical heritage and to be confident young musicians. For my students, attending a concert at Carnegie Hall is a once in a lifetime event. This trip will create lasting memories that will become stories passed down to their children.

Most importantly, this trip will help my students to be a part of the bigger picture in the cultural arts scene in New York City.

These children are growing up in New York! They deserve to experience it in every way! Inspire a child. Create hope. Plant the seeds in their hearts that they can do anything they put their mind to. Please consider donating to our project and making our dreams come true.
