"The benefits of using comics in the classroom are certainly great, both in increasing literacy and in addressing the educational needs of differentiated learners." - Jennifer Haines, "Why Teach with Comics?"
I teach at a Title 1, rural school on a barrier island in South Carolina.
Many of our students' parents, and even some grandparents, attended this small school. Though my students are excited and energetic children, they are also struggling readers. Providing interesting materials that they enjoy reading is one of my main priorities in order to move them toward becoming lifelong readers.
My Project
These TOON Graphics help students visualize by bringing the text to life in a way that captures young readers’ imaginations and makes them want to read on—and read more. This visualization may be one of the best ways to promote becoming a lifelong reader. This hardcover collection of comics introduces great storytelling by exploring classic tales from around the world, and is comprised of high-interest genres, including Greek mythology, fantasy, adventure, and fairy tales.
Readers who love to read...that is my goal for my students.
Making this set of comics available to them is one way I hope to move toward this goal!
