My Students

Do you want to live forever? Why is there death? These profound questions, and more, are powerfully explored through a suspenseful story in Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. I want to help my students explore these questions themselves with their own individual copies of the book.

My fourth-grade students are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special education needs.

They all come together at our small elementary school in New York City. For the second year in a row, I'll be collaborating with a special education teacher, working with a higher proportion of special-needs kids.

My Project

I am requesting a copy of the classic book Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt, for each of my students. I will be reading Tuck Everlasting aloud to my class this year, as I have often done in the past. I expect that they will respond as other kids have--they'll be riveted by the idea of a spring whose water confers immortality on anyone who drinks it. They'll get into heated discussions on whether they'd drink the water given the chance. They'll discuss life and death deeply, with reference to their own experiences and anxieties. They will visualize a sleepy rural environment, so different from their own city streets. At the same time, they will often be challenged by the sophisticated vocabulary and syntax of this book. They will want to reread and write down their thoughts in the margins. And I will be assigning them to create personal responses through writing and art. Having their own copies of the book will make this all possible.

Tuck Everlasting is a book that gives kids the opportunity to think about "adult" ideas like death and what is truly natural.

It's a book that respects children as readers and thinkers. I have no doubt that my students will greatly treasure and often reread their copies of Tuck Everlasting.
