Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my 5th year at the same Title I middle school, and I can't see myself anywhere else because of the students. Our school's population is highly diverse, and many face the obstacles of poverty - roughly 90% are minority students and 90% receive free/reduced-price lunch. Our school is a big part of the community, where families take great pride in the successes of their children, our students.

They are students who deserve the chance to explore and engage in authentic learning experiences.

These kids show up at school, despite whatever struggles they may be facing, and take on the academic world. They are full of energy and enthusiasm waiting to be channeled, and I am lucky to work with them.

My Project

My students are about to begin their unit on genetics and adaptations. They will be learning about all of the rare and interesting traits that help plants and animals survive in the many, varied climates of the world.

This field trip to our wonderful city zoo will be a capstone to the unit, where my students can observe amazing animal adaptations in person and have a chance to articulate how those adaptations connect the animal to their habitat.

Many students have been to the zoo before, in elementary school, so I would like to utilize the enrichment presentations that the zoo offers specifically to secondary students to make it an even more meaningful experience.

If students have any interest at all in a zoo type career I will have them attend the "So you want to work at the Zoo" class to help provide more visibility to STEM jobs for my students. If not, I will have them attend the "Dental Detectives" class that will help them use what they have learned about adaptations in an authentic way. The clipboards I have requested will make it easier for my students to record observations, questions, and data as we explore the zoo.
