My Project

Students in my class pursue independent research projects that explore a wide variety of topics. These exceptional science students are limited only by the lack of equipment in our research laboratory. The handheld ultrasound homogenizer - cell disrupter that we are requesting would allow many students to access the chemicals found inside cells that are protected by tough cell walls or connective tissue.

An ultrasound homogenizer-cell disruptor is an essential tool for accessing extracting chemicals found inside cells.

For example, one of my student projects focuses on the antimicrobial properties of plants used in traditional Chinese medicine. With only a mortar and pestle, my students are left with a fibrous pulp with diluted cell contents. With a homogenizer, the students could break open the cells completely and get a much stronger cell extract.

Another project that would benefit from a homogenizer-cell disrupter is about the effect of smoking on a person's ability to recover from a traumatic brain injury. In order to get a sample of a human protein, Tau, that is created by injured brains we will culture a strain of the nematode C. elegans that has been genetically engineered to create human Tau. We need the homogenizer to extract the Tau from the worms. Once extracted, we can test Tau with and without nicotine on wildtype C. elegans.

Please help me bring my students' research projects to a professional level so they can realize the potential of the experiments they have designed and compete with students working in professional laboratories. Thank you!
