My Project

How can we increase vocabulary, build schema, and create engagement in reading? The answer could be in tying hands-on science investigation and social studies artifacts to reading books.

I need science supplies, social studies artifacts, storage containers, and I'll tie them to books we already have, audio books on the computer, and science experiments or hands-on investigation of artifacts.

Imagine opening a zipper pouch (we already have pouches) or box with a partner or trio of friends to find vocabulary cards, objects for an experiment, and a book to read. The directions take you to a world of inquiry where you'll discover new things through reading and carrying out an experiment together. Imagine reading about Native Americans and then opening a mystery box with an arrowhead, an oyster shell, and a rabbit fur. Your task is to explain how these items helped Native Americans survive. The next box leads you to a book about bison and deer and then the mystery box holds a deer antler, a jaw bone and diagrams of a bison and a deer with arrows pointing to their various parts. Your job is to research what they were used for (stomach, horns, hoofs). Help me bring this idea to life.
