My Students

These students are truly the future generation. They notice the prejudice in the world, and how it is growing, and they are eager to work together to find a solution. They reflect the diversity of Brooklyn (and all of New York) and are willing to learn from each other's experiences and points of view. I feel so fortunate to work with such dedicated students. Although our focus is math, we often question the world around us, and I hope that their time in my classroom better prepares them for what is to come.

My Project

I believe that one of the best ways a student can learn is through experience. The Kids N Culture program has created experiential learning opportunities for students who would not otherwise be able to afford them. For six months, students use the city as our classroom. We listen to guest speakers, visit museums, and interact with professionals who are working in various fields around the world. This alone opens new doors for our students. When they have completed the course work, students then have the chance to travel - for many of these students, it will be their first time on a plane. This particular program is traveling to Alaska. There, students will see first hand how changing climates are affecting the earth, will better understand native communities after spending a day living in their shoes, and will see just how important math and science are to careers in engineering, conservation, and ecology.
