Experiencing the Culture of Chicago

My students need bus transportation to and from Chicago, Illinois for a 4-day trip that will include visits to museums, zoos, parks, malls, and other attractions. This trip is scheduled to take place in June 2010.

Help Ms. Kobilka

I teach 8th grade science in K-8 urban school. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Our school population has been changing in the past few years, increasing our number of students in poverty.

Eighth grade is a transitional year for students in this district. Next year they will go off to high school, which will be a very foreign place, especially for many students who have spent their entire school career in this K-8 building. We want to make this last year special for the students; one way that we have done this in the past is by taking a trip to Chicago with them. Students will have so many wonderful experiences while they visit Chicago. We visit museums, including the Adler Planetarium and Chicago Institute of Art. We see the sights of Chicago by visiting the Sky Deck of the Sears Tower, and take a boat cruise along Lake Michigan to view the diverse architecture of the city. We go to Lincoln Park Zoo, Navy Pier, and many other places unique to Chicago. This trip is an incentive for students to do their best all school year, a grand finale to a wonderful year.

In order to get around in Chicago, we hire coach buses. They bring us to Chicago from Minnesota, then "chauffeur" us around town to the various attractions. It's an essential part of the trip, but a very expensive one.

Students look forward to the trip to Chicago all year. They start saving money for it over the summer, before school even starts. It guides our academic instruction all year; we as teachers know what the students will be seeing and experiencing in Chicago, and prepare them for this by focusing our studies in that direction. Unfortunately, many of our students can't afford the hefty cost. They are living in poverty, and every dollar is needed to pay for food and housing. We want ALL of our students to be able to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We would like to be able to lower the cost for them by taking the bus costs out of the equation all together. We will do our best as a school community to help the students afford the rest of the costs.
