I am an Art Teacher in a junior high public school for the Buffalo Public School District in Buffalo, New York. I would like to collaborate with the English teachers in grades 6, 7 and 8 to teach a cross-curricular lesson on Asian-centered literature and Asian art. The students at my school rarely have the ability to leave the inner-city and generally lack knowledge and understanding of cultures other than their own. 96% of them are African-Americans and 98% live at or below the poverty line. As most of my students rarely have an opportunity to travel beyond the city-limits, I would at least like them to learn about other cultures through literary and art experiences. I have made a proposal to the English teachers at my school and they have agreed that teaching our students about Asian-centered literature would truly benefit them in broadening their world-view. I am interested in obtaining some books that would teach my students about the history, cultures and traditions of Korea, Japan, and India. I chose three books that also have a related art component. For example, Park's "A Single Shard" tells the story of a young boy who works as an apprentice for a professional potter in 12th century Korea. While reading the novel in English class, students will put into practice what they learned in Art Class. Students will be able to make a variety of vessels as described in the novel on our pottery wheels. "The Homeless Bird" novel has a quilting art component and "The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn" would relate to Japanese Anime illustration and computer graphics. Again, the content that the kids learn from reading their novels in English class will be reinforced in creating related Asian-inspired artworks. A lot of research has confirmed, and I have witnessed over the years, that when students apply what they have learned with hands-on activities, they have a much greater ability to retain that information. That marks the the left-brain - right-brain transfer. We are seeking to receive three classroom sets of Asian-centered novels, one for each of the three grade levels taught (6,7,8) and a few other books that can be used in class as visual aids to describe the vast diversity of world cultures. All of the literature that has been selected for these lessons are tremendous and many have won national awards. I am very confident that the students will be really engaged and enjoy their reading and art experiences. Additionally, this lesson plan would allow students to read a different Asian-centered novel at each of the three grade levels, providing them with a well-rounded foundation of education about Asia. An additional benefit of purchasing these book sets is the ability to use them for many years to come. Thank you very much for your consideration.
