Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I wish I could say I see myself in my students, but in all honestly, they are better than I could have ever strived to be at their age! I work at a public school which celebrates diversity in all regards: cultural, ethnic, physical, and neurological. From an annual Ability Awareness week which involves community members presenting to our students and shattering the stigmas of the "disability" label, to an Author's Fair when published authors speak to our students about taking risks and shooting for the stars, our school is creating a community of globally ready and culturally competent leaders of tomorrow!

My third graders are highly intelligent and empathetic, and it is my job, as an educator, to provide them with learning experiences which promote not only academic growth but positive social growth as well.

My Project

Finding a text which captures the attention of students born into the digital age can sometimes be hard to find. Little did we know that such a book was created more than 20 years ago! Your donations will go directly to obtaining a class set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for a group of magical third graders who are anxious to read alongside their teacher during class read aloud.

"The read aloud is like the Swiss Army knife of literacy; it has multiple uses at every age and in every content area... Teachers can use read alouds to create a class bond; promote a love of reading; preview information, themes, or text structures; model effective reading; show how texts connect with one another (intertextuality); or provide an exemplar for a genre of writing." The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development

Magic aside, the Harry Potter series covers themes which include, but are not limited to: acceptance of differences, ability (disability) awareness, standing up to peer pressure, creatively solving problems, writing with non-literal language, and the importance of using descriptive language in narratives.
