Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"No, sorry. You may not have your own copy of the book, we don't have enough copies," sadly, this is a statement I find myself saying quite often to my students this school year. I am a gifted education teacher in a suburban school right outside of Atlanta. I teach an Innovative Model Reading class to gifted students in third, fourth, and fifth grade. The purpose of these classes is to challenge and enrich these students using thought provoking literature.

My students are all reading above grade level, which sounds like a good problem to have. However, we still face some challenges even with the "best of students." Since these students are reading above level than most of their peers, the school is lacking in great literature to make the most of these classes and the county's adopted anthology, does not meet the needs of these special students.

I am requesting class sets of historical fiction books for my students. The books requested also cover parts of the state mandated Social Studies curriculum. Having these books, will enable my students to read higher level books and still learn about U.S. history. I have found that reading these types of books, opens up many doors to very thought provoking and higher order thinking questions.

I want to thank you for helping my students reach their full potential and helping them go above and beyond in their Innovative Reading Classes while still developing a love for reading and history.
