This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Can I go book shopping?" is the question my students continue to ask me every week. I would love for my students to continue loving books and to always be excited for the next one they are about to read. This can be tricky when our library lacks the variety and quantity of books they need.

To the children of our school in the South Bronx, school is one of their favorite places.

They know that when they come to school they will learn and they will be loved. They are empathetic, kindhearted, and determined young individuals. They learn these qualities from their peers, teachers, and even the books they indulge in. Our school is located in a high poverty area and many of our students reside in housing projects. Our school provides these children with the skills they need in order to succeed in middle school, high school, and in life. Our school places a heavy importance on literacy, doing our absolute best to raise their reading and writing skills. Our students make this easy for us because of how much they love reading books. They cannot wait to get their hands on the next new book!

My Project

I am asking for 13 nonfiction books and 2 bean bag chairs. My students will be using the books to expand their reading lives into non-fiction as well. Our curriculum requires students to make text-to-text connections and to expand their horizons to include nonfiction materials. With these books, my students will be able to connect what happens in their fiction books to real life people and events. They will be able to learn about the actual events taking place in their historical fiction books. They will also be able to read about the life of their favorite authors. Like any reader, students need a comfortable place to enjoy their favorite books. The bean bags will allow my students to be comfortable while falling into their books!

Thank you in advance for your generous donations.

With your help my students will be able to continue expanding their reading life and making connections between their books and real life.
