Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you created something - tried something you hadn't before - and when it was done, you stepped back, surveyed your efforts, and thought, "Wow! I did that!" Do you remember the moment when someone else looked at it, and responded, "Wow! You did that?"

This is exactly what my students last project was like.

While they worked on their first attempt to create their own body scrubs, infused oils, slippery elm lozenges, and mandalas, other students came in to watch them, to ask questions about the materials and process. My colleagues, their other teachers came in, to take a peek at their work. Parents, who were in the building for Parent Teacher Conferences, asked about what they were doing, got to sample the scrubs the students had mixed up, and asked how their own children could join in their future projects. As students dropped in, they readily demonstrated what materials and ingredients were needed to make each concoction, leading and directing on how to mix and how to use each product. The interest their project garnered - from both faculty and staff! - has taken us all by surprise. But it has also provided my students with momentum.

My Project

In addition to expanding their efforts into workshops they will lead, and beginning to blend oils to create new scents, they are looking to add another creation to their list: gardener's salve! Continuing in the vein of making use of all-natural ingredients, combining them to create products they can use for self-care and promote their well-being, the students will make use of melted beeswax and coconut oil, which we will heat in microwave-safe bowls, blended with essential oil(s) to make multi-purpose salves, which we will store in small plastic containers. With spring upon us, students will also make scrubs utilizing herbs and citrus oils. Our 'expert students' will guide students new to these materials and projects through demonstrations and guided practice.

In addition to supporting the bringing together of students from different course sections and English proficiencies, students will learn how to use materials that can be found on the shelves of a supermarket and stored in a pantry to create products that can be used to improve one's health and wellness.

What's further, the simplicity of the steps required to mix and assemble these products make them easy to replicate at home, with friends, with family, and well beyond their high school tenure.
