Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What is the food chain?" This question was asked to me this year by one of my 4th grade students when we were doing an animal study. My students need more resources to explore scientific concepts.

My students are predominately minority students who live in a low socioeconomic neighborhood.

Our school is Empowerment and we have made huge gains in the last four years and now we need to make even more gains and the resources available to us are falling short of our need.

My Project

We need a science library, non-fiction activity readers and CD-ROM interactive science activities to study science within the classroom. These resources will allow the students to learn scientific concepts about their bodies, animals, electricity, simple machines, and magnetism. These resources are all inclusive which means that the students can not only read and watch what they are learning they can interact with the new ideas. Another bonus is that so many teachers say that there is not enough time to teach science so they tend to stay away from it, however, these lessons are not long and do not require a lot of set up or clean up so more teachers will be willing to use them. These resources will not only be used in my 4th grade classroom but all 5 (150 students) of the 4th grade classrooms at our school. Students will finally be able to understand the world around them and make connections to what they already know about life so that they can experience success and a desire to learn.

Students at our school have limited access to higher level knowledge when they are not at school.

Their families are struggling to make ends meat so there just is not enough time or resources for them to expose their children to museums and other learning activities that they would like to. Giving students the opportunity to explore will make students more engaged in learning and want to spend more time at school.
