This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in school today have to know how to use technology to keep up with the rest of the world. The problem is our school, like so many others, does not have the resources available for the technology of today.

My students are in the only self-contained 5th grade class in our school, which means we have a combination of Students with Disabilities, students with English as their second language and general education students.

Due to the many different ability levels of the class, many strategies are used in order to deliver a concept or lesson. I would love to begin implementing a technology component along with Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies but due to the fact that the school is in a low socio-economic area, many of the students do not have or see the newest technology available. So many of the students have the motivation and desire to learn about technology, but they do not have the economic means to do so.

My Project

The days of rote memorization from a static textbook are long gone. Students are used to being engaged by audio, video, and other forms of multi-media. The iPad mini is the perfect device to accomplish this. I can go to the Khan academy and show my students step-by-step video lessons of Math concepts. They can use the iPads to film a Science Lab and then put it into iMovie and make their own video about key Scientific methods. Not to mention the fact that they can use the iPads to complete their Reading Plus, Success Maker, Accelerated Reader and FCAT Explorer assignments. It is an all-in-one wonder. It truly is the computer that should have been made from the beginning.

We need to compete with the rest of the world.

It is almost impossible to do this with little to no new technological resources available to us. These two iPads will make the world of difference for the students in my class because many of them could only dream of using such a device, let alone taking shared ownership of such a marvel.
