My students needs are varying and complex. All of my students have moderate to severe physical and cognitive disabilities so we always need communication devices like CheapTalks and GoTalks.

My Students

I am a Speech Therapist and I work in a school that serves children with moderate to severe cognitive and physical disabilities. I have a caseload of 60 amazing students. They have various communication and learning needs. With the classroom teachers, I spend most of my time trying to find a way to teach our students as much practical language as they can learn and express. Some of my students are visually impaired or hearing impaired. Some are motorically impaired or non-amublatory. All of my students have some impairment of their cognition and learn with difficulty. They do learn and it is up to us as teachers and therapists to create accommodations that will give them the ability to access their social world and academics. We can be very creative, but we also cannot create everything. Some things, such as communication devices, have to be purchased. This is where we have the most difficulty since the current economic culture surrounding education warrants incredible creativity for funding of needed supplies that our administration has no way to offer us or fund.

My Project

My 60 students have physical and cognitive disabilities that limit their ability to communicate. For instance, my students are, for the most part, minimally to non verbal. They have not acquired language like typically developing children do. Some have physical disabilities that limit their movement and access to switches or devices. Some have cognitive disabilities that limit their ability to express language or even to learn language receptively. Some have both limitations. These tools such as the communication devices or voice output devices give our children a voice. They can use these devices both socially and academically to request, comment, protest, and to answer academic comprehension questions.
