My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met Ronald Dahl.

Our class includes 20 general education students and 12 special education students who are diverse, bright, and brimming with potential.

They are excited about learning, but many of them have fallen far behind and learning does not always come easy for them. An increased need for repetition makes new content difficult to access. Kinesthetic and visual learning styles make traditional teaching methods less effective. A read aloud, sideshow, and worksheet are rarely engaging enough to make the content stick. More than a third of the class does not speak English as their primary language at home. Most qualify for free or reduced price school lunches, a measure often used to indicate economic status. More than half of the students in the class are more than three full academic years behind in reading, writing, and math.

My Project

An audio center will give my students who read below grade level access to the same rich literature as their peers, allowing them to fall in love with the same great books! Currently, our Listening Center is not as effective as it could be, as it relies on a number of old Cd's and even some cassette tapes. Making our listening center centralized, portable, and fully digital will really help our class build their reading level. It will foster critical thinking skills and engage my students.

We have a fantastic group of students in our classroom!

They love reading and are committed to learning! But because many of them are new to English and many have learning disabilities, reading can be very challenging. With an organized listening center in the classroom, I am able to give small group instruction to half of the class while the other half engages literature and math independently for future discussion.
