Exercising Art Muscles With Printmaking

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about block printing. There are some old tools that aren't being used and would like to see the students learn about the technique. Paper and printing blocks are expensive.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty school with a large minority population. This presents our students with a lot of challenges. What I love about them is the desire to learn more. Many of them possess a resilience that I personally cannot comprehend, not having had the same life experiences.

My students are the dreamers of big dreams.

A DACA student who graduated last year got a full ride to Columbia University for Art History because he made the most of every opportunity we could give him. He spent a good amount of time last year worried that he would be deported. Now, he's on track to make Dean's List his first semester. Another is applying to all of the major Art schools in the Northeast. She's incredibly talented and wants to see where she can go with her skills.

Our community is pretty insular and very few of our students venture away. It has been part of my personal mission to have more of them "test the waters" away from home. Some of the students definitely see the value of an education and realize that the broader world away from home may hold some great adventures and opportunities.

My Project

We have some old infrastructure, carving tools, and a small press. Block printing has some prohibitive consumable costs. Getting some carving blocks and good quality printmaking paper could enrich the learning of our students.

Student learning is increased because the student has to plan their design in reverse.

The concept is initially challenging for them as they always seem to want to use text, but it has to be reversed to be read correctly.

The students learn about relief carving and how it can be manipulated to a variety of effects.

The students learn a great deal about positive and negative space in art and how to use it to increase their level of composition skills. They also learn about the ability to create multiple images from the same source which can be used in a number of ways, from creating a limited edition of prints to creating a design on fabric. The technique has multiple possibilities going forward in an art student's learning.
