My Students

Children today spend a lot of time indoors watching TV or playing on tablets or video games. In our state, there is a high percentage of obesity. I would like to create a program for parents and children of preschool age to encourage them to use technology to exercise using a Wii, Just Dance games, and Amazon Tablets to dance, find exercise videos, practice yoga, and take pictures of themselves doing healthy activities.

Some of my students are typically developing and some have different abilities.

We live in a rural area of West Virginia. The children are very energetic and are at an age that we can use some learning experiences to encourage a lifelong passion.

We recently started a gardening program to sustain healthy food choices. The logical next step would be exercise! We are number one in obesity in the nation, and I would like to change that image, even if it is just for a small group. We also have a huge drug epidemic, and I believe that a passion for healthy foods and a healthy body will give these children the ability to know that this is more important than drugs.

My Project

We live in rural West Virginia, where obesity and drug use are severe problems. I would love to instill a love for exercise in my students. We have a playground, but we can only go outside weather permitting. I do not take students out in the rain, snow, or cold weather. Unfortunately, in North Central West Virginia, we have a lot of cold, rainy, and snowy days. During these days, we are able to take one hour and devote it to gross motor skills in the classroom. Having the ability to use technology to move is just another way for the kids to learn to love and take care of their bodies.

I have noticed over the last few years that with the rise in use of technology in young children, especially before school age children, there is a lack of fine motor skills and gross motor skills.

I'm hoping to use the four Fire Tablets I am requesting to have the students find ways to exercise and strengthen both gross motor and fine motor skills.

The state statistics show a growth in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and drug abuse. I think we need to change the way parents and students look at the use of technology and incorporate movement with technology.
