Several years ago I began a month long unit in my Kindergarten classroom titled "Healthy You". The children learn about their body parts, nutrition, hygiene, and most importantly exercise. I even earned a local award in Indiana called The Golden Apple Award for my unit and it's creativity. One component still lacking is the equipment to teach the exercise unit properly. Another teacher and I use a fitness center located on our high school campus and take the children over for a "day of exercising". We set up several areas with age appropriate activities for our Kindergarten students to do. Unfortunately we are always searching for the best equipment to use with our five and six year olds. The equipment used by the high school students is not appropriate and nothing has been purchased for the children in our school. I teach in the Early Childhood Center. We are a centralized Kindergarten servicing 500 Kindergarteners in Decatur Township, located in Indianapolis. At this time only myself and my teaching partner have done this activity which includes 100 children in the school. We are hoping that with the new equipment we can encourage other teachers in our building to do the same activity with their students. Since our classes are only half day, we do not have Special Area teachers such as Physical Education to teach these concepts to our small children. We are in need of equipment for tumbling and an obstacle course. We would also like to find some activites for dexterity such as games with beanbags to work the smaller muscles as well as the large ones. Thank you for taking my project under consideration. I know our children would benefit from it greatly.
