Our students are located in a very diverse urban setting of northern New Jersey. Our school includes PreK-3, PreK-4, and kindergarten with an overwhelming population of special needs students. We strive to provide an environment where students feel safe and learn respect for themselves and others. We want our students to be confident learners and to learn without boundaries so that they know that anything is possible if we try.
My classroom motto is “I will try!” It encourages students to learn without fear of failing because we can always try again!
It goes without saying how proud I am to hear my students say, "I'm doing it!" However, we also learn that it's ok if we cannot do it because we can turn to a friend and ask for help. Kindness, respect, and empowerment are encouragement extended to our entire school.
This is our school's cheer: "Kindness and respect, Oh yea! Means we'll be nice and always care. We'll watch what we do and say, 'cause that is 'our' way!"
My Project
Storybooks are kindergartners' first step towards traditional reading. Early readers learn to read by telling a story through illustrations and eventually connect words to the pictures. After reading books several times, students start to fall in love with books and memorize the stories. The best way to get students excited abut reading is providing them books with characters they are familiar with.
My students are so excited and dramatic when they read about their favorite super heroes!
The actions and vivid illustrations in these leveled books allow for all level of readers to become confident readers, be creative story tellers by looking at pictures, build a connection and converse with their peers by having common interests in characters they are familiar with.
