My Students

Do you remember the excitement of an experiment day in science? By donating to this project, you will provide the entire fifth grade with multiple "experiment" days as they study interactions in ecosystems in addition to human impact on ecosystems.

Our fifth grade students live in a rural area and are curious about the world around them.

Our students love hands-on experiments and look forward to having opportunities to collaborate in groups to solve problems. Our students are currently learning about the complexity of the ecosystems around the world and the impact that humans have on these ecosystems.

My Project

My students need materials and living organisms to help them understand the interactions that take place in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems: pill bugs, duckweed, and gambusia. The resources from this project will help all fifth grade students design pop bottle aquarium/terrarium ecosystems. Students will use pop bottles, soil, and water to form the base of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems adding living organisms such as mosquito fish and crickets over time. Not only will students observe interactions between the living organisms in the ecosystems, but they will also create identical ecosystems without animals. These identical ecosystems (void of animals) will allow students to see the impact that fertilizer, salt, and vinegar (pollutants) have on an ecosystem. Furthermore, students will work in teams to build, design, observe, and care for their ecosystems. These materials will allow students to participate in a hands-on learning experience each day they are studying how energy is transferred in ecosystems.

Please consider donating to this project to give students a chance to understand the world around them.

Each day these students drive by fields and ponds. Your donation will increase each fifth grade student's knowledge and understanding of how balance contributes to the energy passed within a particular ecosystem and also between ecosystems. Finally, after comparing polluted ecosystems to clean, healthy ecosystems students are sure to be more environmentally conscious, informed citizens.
