My Students

My fifth grade classroom is located in the East Village, a lively and diverse neighborhood in downtown Manhattan. As per our mission statement, our school is dedicated to providing "an environment where all children and all families are valued, welcomed, cared for and supported." Our core values are inclusion, kindness, self awareness, social action and joy of learning.I have not yet met my new classroom of students, but I can't wait to build a caring community of support and hard work with them!

My Project

The books that I've requested will become a treasured part of our classroom library. There are a variety of levels, from picture books that I use for interactive read alouds, to high-level chapter books that students can read independently. And they cover a wide span of topics, from George, a chapter book about a transgender girl, to El Deafo, a graphic novel memoir about the author's experience of growing up with hearing aids.

Incredible books can make a world of difference to a reader.

Great books can act as mirrors, providing an affirming reflection of our experiences, or as windows, providing eye-opening peeks into other peoples' lives. All summer, I've been on the hunt for great books that will act as both, and this list is the result. I can't wait to get these amazing books into my new students' hands!
