Help Mrs. Liberatore

Why would a child want to work hard to learn to read if it didn't feel rewarding? As a 2nd and 3rd grade special education teacher in an urban area, this is a question I face every hour of every day.

My eight and nine year old students have emotional needs which make it difficult for them to build their self esteem and their academic skills. They have had little success in school due to their difficulties coping and working towards a goal. I believe that teaching them to read can be a medium to increased self confidence and provide immeasurable gains in school and at home.

My students struggle with many aspects of reading, though it is clear to me that further motivation will help the learning process immensely. Having a new classroom library of award winning and high quality books can help serve as part of the overall "want" to learn to read.

You can give my students a chance to be successful in school and help them want to learn. Learning to read is incredibly empowering, and I hope that you can help make this a reality for my class.
