Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach second grade at an inner-city school. We start each day with a family meeting. During the family meeting we discuss spelling words, homework, and the day ahead. I have a high population of Hispanic students this year. My greatest challenge is helping them to succeed in learning English.

There are twenty-two students in my classroom.

Ten of the students are English as a second language learners (ESL). They are having difficulties functioning in the classroom because of the language barrier. All of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. The students are anxious to learn and become very despondent when they can't function as well as the other students.

My Project

I will use the dry erase board for the family meeting as well as small group instruction. During the family meeting, I will use the dry erase board and the magnetic letters to show students how to spell words, build word families, and review homework assignments. These materials will be used in small groups to help students build confidence while reading and writing words.

If students don't feel good about themselves and their achievements, they are more likely to cause problems in school.

The materials that I have requested will allow me to help my students achieve literacy. Being fluent readers and competent writers is the best gift that I can give my students.
