Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach ESL in the Bronx to beginner and intermediate level students. They are in 9th or 10th grade.
My students, being newcomers to the United States, struggle in their content area classes, especially science. They are often overwhelmed with the amount of technical vocabulary that they are bombarded with.
Students do an interdisciplinary project where they write a nonfiction research paper on an endangered species in their ESL class. Last year, we read a simple book with rich content about endangered animals called "Almost Gone" in order to introduce this writing unit. The students loved it, especially the beginners. It helped them build confidence in their reading abilities in English. It was so successful that I'd like to build an entire library of short books dealing with science themes. Moreover, my 9th graders have to take the Living Environment Regents (a NY state-mandated exam) this year, and this would enhance their preparation.
Help get immigrant kids excited about reading, science, and learning English so that they can achieve the American dream!
