Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our day starts with my students coming in and enjoying breakfast in the classroom. We sing along to our morning songs and then work together to complete our calendar routine. We then break up into our groups run by myself and the classroom aides. We spend most of our day working in learning groups.

My classroom is an Early Education Special Education classroom grades K-1.

It is comprised of students with mild to severe disabilities including Autism, Developmental Delays, Intellectual Disabilities, and Other Health Impairment. Our enrollment is higher this year with 14 students. About two weeks into this school year and things are running smoothly. Students are adapting to the new setting, classroom rules, and routines. These students are very sweet and motivated to learn and make progress. Our school campus is taking steps toward incorporating technology into our students learning. They offer students a number of resources including a computer lab, various educational software and a class set of ipads shared by all classrooms.

My Project

While our school offers opportunities to visit the school computer lab, my students' various exceptionalities require one to one instruction as well as more repetition and practice in order to retain information and learn new skills. Having a desktop computer in the classroom would allow my students the ability to access educational software in the classroom as well as master basic computers skills. Students would be able to take turns rotating on the computer in the comforts of the familiar environment that is our classroom. I would be able to incorporate the use of the computer into our differentiated instruction groups. Furthermore, some of the educational software we use provide students with certificates of achievement and various other supplemental materials that support what they have learned. Having a printer in the classroom would permit the students to print these items out to take home and share with their parents.

With education becoming more and more integrated with technology and Common Core incorporating technology standards it is vital that my students develop basic computer skills in order to better facilitate this transition.

Students with various learning disabilities often benefit from a number of educational strategies. Having the computer in my classroom to supplement our curriculum would grant my students the added benefit of using engaging and visually stimulating activities.
