Evolve an Urban Teen

My students need books about hominid evolution, 3 science coloring (text) books and 11 DVDs that illustrate evolution, gene mutation, disease spreading (case study from NY!), breeding, the incredible human body, famous scientists, and the brain.

Help Ms. W.

Hi! I teach 9th grade sustainable science in an urban, high-needs, low-preforming High School. In NY, we are still required to teach evolution!

Did you know that only 40% of the United States accepts the evolution of organisms on planet earth? (link: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/bigphotos/21329204.html) As a science teacher, I'd like to do my part to increase this statistic. However, evolution is a tricky situation in the religious community I teach in...

Therefore, I realized that this "opinion" can't come just from me. It needs to be supported by well-known scientists (Jane Goodall) and mind-blowing data (pick up the book "The Last Human) and illustrated processes (disease spreading, gene mutation, breeding). That is why I identified amazing books, DVDs and activities to slowly introduce the students to the concepts of evolution. I'll do this gradually--We'll look at breeding in dogs, and our ability to "change" them. Move on to the "evolution" of our food. The "evolution" of diseases. I hope in the end we'll be ready to grapple with hominid evolution (I have a life-sized model skull of Homo erectus waiting in my supply closet).

Help "evolve" my students. Understanding evolution is going to essential in our fight of diseases, protection of Earth's diverse inhabitants and our general sustainability as a species. My students deserve to learn where they came from. Thanks for helping me reach this goal. And--as a side note--since this project is academic, it will simultaneously be working to increase the college preparedness of my students. We will do Socratic Seminars to discuss this "hot topics"--teaching discussion skills. We will evaluate through writing the validity of different researchers' conclusions/evidence, etc. We will articulately support our own opinions with evidence...The more diverse resources available in my classroom--the more varied exercises I can give the students to prepare them for college. Thanks!
