My Students

People often ask me why I commute so far away to teach when I could work in a much more affluent community closer to where I live. The simple answer is because I have never been a happier teacher than when I'm with my students.

They make me smile, laugh, sing and dance, and challenge me everyday.

There are five different primary languages in my homeroom this year, the entire district receives free breakfast and lunch due to high poverty levels and there's no where else I'd rather be.

My Project

Teaching in a first grade classroom often feels overwhelming, these excited and anxious little bundles of energy don't know what to expect now that they are "big kids". Since many of my students do not have much money, we, the teachers, try our best to provide all of the students with school supplies ourselves. It's a wonderful feeling seeing their eyes widen when they realize that all the brand new supplies are for them.

We go through many supplies throughout the year, and I often joke with them that the only possible explanations are that they are either eating the supplies, or an elf is coming in and taking them at night!

We are in constant need of pencils, crayons, glue, and dry erase markers, all of which are used throughout the day for students to show their learning and understanding. We use folders and binders, known to the children as our "Books of Fun!" for literacy, they are filled with poems, songs, reference sheets, sight words, and student work. Finally, we could use some wipes to clean up the inevitable mess that is made when you get 20+ kids under the age of seven in a classroom together. We certainly appreciate anything that you can give, thank you for your kindness and generosity!
